OUR HISTORY
A vision of Rev. Samuel L. Whitlow, Jr., Pastor of Historic Calvary Church in the Parkland neighborhood of Louisville, KY, Bridging the Gap was established in 2010 as Camp Calvary. Rev. Whitlow assembled a team of talented staff and volunteers who dedicated their time and prided themselves in building a legacy of learning and academic development for kids ages 6 to 11 during their out-of-school time. In 2014, we adopted the name Bridging the Gap Learning Academy.
Bridging the Gap has become a significant out-of-school learning catalyst in Parkland and the neighboring communities by forming strategic alliances with Jefferson County Public Schools, local organizations, and community leaders. We offer under-served and low-income families a safe and structured environment where children can grow, learn, and develop.
Aside from basic academic skills, such as reading, writing, science, and math, Bridging the Gap helps kids grow emotionally and socially. We make this possible through enrichment programming focused on such areas as anti-bullying, grooming, nutrition, and drug prevention.
During the Summer Learning Academy, children master academic concepts and enjoy recreational activities, including field trips, swimming and tennis lessons, and group games. These activities are designed to empower youth by expanding their knowledge and exposing them to new experiences.
In 2014, Bridging the Gap adopted the mantra "Hope, Dream, Believe." Today, we stand in the gap for families who need hope, encouraging them to believe that dreams are possible.
